Overview/History

Reach One Youth Organization, Inc. is a non-profit, 501c3 organization established to provide positive youth development programs for underserved, overlooked and disenfranchised youth. The Reach One Youth Organization, Inc. strategy was started as a way to pay it forward through merging a passion for two things—youth and basketball. However, as time grew on the founders realized all youth ages 3-18 should have an opportunity to have the best sporting experience possible while incorporating mentorship. As such Reach One Sports (a youth sports program) was developed. Sports are used as a tool, a positive youth development (PYD) activity, that promotes and builds character while also helping equip each student-athlete with the life skills needed to succeed in the present and near future. Prevention and intervention efforts are incorporated to combat “School to Prison Pipeline” as well as the "Disproportionate Minority Contact" in the Juvenile System thereby, creating healthy and positive support systems to help "Keep Young People Out of Prison and in the Classroom" (American Institute for Research, 2012). Our programs strive to provide other ways of positive youth development so as to expose youth to more than just sports. As such, other program components include: travel/club sports (i.e., currently basketball only), mentorship/college readiness, family engagement.

Sports (currently Basketball and Cheerleading)

[Flag Football and Soccer coming soon]

Organized, structured environments from experienced high school coaches, former high school and collegiate athletes encourage hard work, discipline, fundamentals, and fun in the game of sports. Off the court activities are provided as opportunities to reinforce positive behavior while promoting character-building, college readiness and leadership skills. Activities include but are not limited to: College Tours, volunteerism in the local community, team building, local youth events in the Tallahassee and surrounding area, and also providing support services by connecting families to resources in the community.

Mentorship/College Readiness

Reach One Sports provides opportunities for participants to engage in their future through mentorship, exposure, and life beyond sports. Reach 1 Elite (a competitive travel club of Reach One Sports) participants participate in a college tour incorporated with each tournament weekend as a point of exposure to higher education and life beyond sports and extracurricular activities. However, students not participating in sports activities are also encouraged to participate in college tours through our Reach Success Program. All students participating in Reach One Sports programs are challenged and encouraged to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the classroom. Students also encouraged to work hard towards college entry (be it academic, athletic and/or volunteerism scholarship) and go on to complete a degree. Even if the student does not succeed in obtaining a scholarship, he/she is still encouraged to complete a college degree or trade to be better positioned for future success.

Family Engagement

The family engagement program is designed to empower and meet the needs of the families we serve.
